Captain America Civil War Film

Pop culture: 'Captain America: Civil War' actor coming to Wizard World Tulsa

Captain America: Civil War” is expected to be one of the biggest movies of 2016. A few months after the film’s release, one of its stars will make an appearance in Tulsa.

Sebastian Stan plays Bucky Barnes, alias the Winter Soldier, in the Marvel cinematic universe. He is the latest celebrity guest to enlist for duty at the Wizard World Tulsa pop culture convention, scheduled Oct. 21-23 at Cox Business Center in downtown Tulsa.

In the early years of fandom, comic-book and science-fiction conventions appealed solely to people who were passionate about comics and sci-fi. But conventions have evolved into pop culture cons with guest lists constructed for mass appeal. Wizard World stages a series of pop culture cons around the country. Tulsa will be a Wizard World tour stop for a third consecutive year.

Stan has played Bucky in both Captain America movies so far, and the Winter Soldier will play a significant (and divisive) role in “Captain America: Civil War.”

Other movie and TV guests scheduled to appear at the 2016 Wizard World Tulsa con are William Shatner (“Star Trek”), Ian Somerhalder (“The Vampire Diaries”), Michael Cudlitz (“The Walking Dead”), Michael Rooker (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “The Walking Dead”), James Marsters (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), Lou Ferrigno (“The Incredible Hulk”) and Jason David Frank (“Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers”).

In addition to “Captain America: Civil War,” Stan also stars in the recently released movie “The Bronze,” which co-stars Melissa Rauch of “The Big Bang Theory.”

Bucky is the name used by several different fictional superheroes appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, usually as a sidekick to Captain America. The original Bucky, James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby and first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (cover-dated March 1941), which was published by Marvel's predecessor, Timely Comics. In 2005 the original Bucky was brought back from supposed death as the villainous assassin Winter Soldier, and later briefly assumed the role of Captain America when Steve Rogers was presumed to be dead.

Sebastian Stan portrays the character in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) as Bucky Barnes and in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) as the Winter Soldier. He also portrayed the character in a post-credits scene in Ant-Man (2015) and will reprise the role in the sequel Captain America: Civil War (2016).

Captain America is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by cartoonists Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, the character first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (cover dated March 1941) from Timely Comics, a predecessor of Marvel Comics. Captain America was designed as a patriotic supersoldier who often fought the Axis powers of World War II and was Timely Comics' most popular character during the wartime period. The popularity of superheroes waned following the war and the Captain America comic book was discontinued in 1950, with a short-lived revival in 1953. Since Marvel Comics revived the character in 1964, Captain America has remained in publication.

Doctor Strange picks a side in the Captain America: Civil War fight

While its directors have assured us that Captain America: Civil War is definitely not another Avengers movie it has all the hallmarks of one. It boasts a massive cast of iconic Marvel characters and will introduce two newcomers; Spider-Man and Black Panther. So it seems a little.... strange (ahem) that the title character of Marvel's next movie isn't involved. That of course doesn't mean he's not got an opinion on the superhero battle.

As you may know, the movie finds the Avengers split into two camps: Team Cap oppose the Superhuman Registration Act while Team Iron Man support it. To assuage our curiosity, Civil War directors Anthony and Joe Russo hit up Facebook to let the world know which side Doctor Strange is on. Here's the GIF that says it all:

There you have it - he's on Team Cap. It's a bit of a surprise either way, really, as in the comics Doctor Strange objects to the fight and chooses to stay out of it. But as we know, the Marvel Cinematic Universe tends to take liberties with its source material so we might see the sorcerer supreme join forces with Cap in a future movie. Avengers: Infinity War perhaps?

Directed by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, and starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, and Sebastian Stan, Captain America: Civil War opens in UK cinemas on April 29, 2016 and May 6, 2016 in the US. Doctor Strange opens in UK cinemas on October 28, 2016 before opening in US theatres on November 4, 2016.
