Here’s Who Alfre Woodard Plays in ‘Captain America: Civil War’

You may be reading that headline thinking, “Wait, Alfre Woodard is in Captain America: Civil War?” She is, though Marvel only officially revealed that little casting tidbit today. In an e-mail sent to press inviting coverage to the upcoming Captain America: Civil War premiere in Los Angeles, Woodard was listed as one of the film’s cast members who will be in attendance (you may remember a similar slip revealed both Linda Cardellini and Julie Delpy’s participation in Avengers: Age of Ultron). The immediate reaction would be that Woodard is making an early appearance as Mariah Dillard, the Luke Cage villain she’s playing on Marvel’s Netflix show. It would be one of the first and strongest connections between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Marvel Netflix Universe. Except that’s not who she’s playing.

According to sources, Woodard has a small, but pivotal role in the beginning of the film. She’ll be playing the mother of an American citizen who was killed during the Battle of Sokovia in Age of Ultron. Her character has a confrontation with Tony Stark where she lays both guilt and blame at him for the death of her son. It’s this encounter that convinces Tony to back the Sokovia Accords that would regulate The Avengers and other “enhanced individuals.”

It may seem weird to cast an Oscar-nominated actress to play two separate roles within the Marvel universe, but this may speak to the growing divide between Marvel Studios and Marvel TV. Despite actors’ willingness to appear across platforms, the crossovers from film to TV have been limited since Samuel L. Jackson’s appearance on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in 2014. Going by when the projects were filmed, it would seem that Woodard was first cast in Civil War, which wrapped principal photography in August of last year, before being cast in Luke Cage (her role wasn’t announced until later that September).

Captain America: Civil War Artwork – Falcon vs. War Machine

Captain America: Civil War is betting on moviegoers being hungry for even more superhero vs. superhero carnage on the big screen by the time it arrives this May, and aims to up the ante considerably by featuring two entire teams of costumed crimefighters battling for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While early marketing for the film has focused on the central conflict between Captain America/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), as the film draws closer the conflicts of their fellow heroes are coming more into focus.

In fact, Civil War will include more than a few superhero one-on-one battles, with photos from the movie’s set teasing brawls between the likes of Cap and Black Panther/T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), among others. Similarly, the latest Civil War concept art to make its way online offers a glimpse at the clash between The Falcon/Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and War Machine/James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) in the film.

From a thematic standpoint, it makes a certain amount of sense that Falcon and War Machine in particular would find themselves facing off during the events of Captain America: Civil War. Both of these characters use high-tech equipment and fly as part of their power-set, in addition to being soldiers (Sam Wilson is a veteran of the Afghanistan War, while James Rhodes is an active duty Colonel in the U.S. Military) and close friends of the leaders of their respective “sides” in the eponymous conflict; one which sees the Marvel superheroes ideologically divided over a new law that places their activities under Government control.

Historically, the matchup holds greater significance as well: In the original Marvel Comics universe, both characters originated (in their most familiar forms) as part of a concerted push by the publisher for greater diversity in the 1970s and early-80s; and both have taken up the mantle of their more famous counterparts as well. Rhodes (previously a supporting character in Iron Man) took over use of the Iron Man identity when Tony Stark was sidelined by alcohol abuse, while Wilson was Captain America’s ally in the 70s and took up the shield himself when Steve Rogers was most-recently sidelined.

The production artwork (originally watermarked to AllPosters) shows the two heroes not only fighting, but showing off some new weaponry that they’ll have in Captain America: Civil War, too. Falcon, previously depicted as mainly using traditional firearms in addition to the capabilities of his mechanical wings, appears to have added a three-pronged cutting laser similar to Iron Man’s to one of his gauntlets – and may be using it to disable/destroy the unidentified gun-like weapon War Machine has been depicted sporting in previously-released images.

While interesting to see, the intense physical violence suggested by the art should give fans of either character pause. Rumors have continued to swirl that not all of The Avengers (or their friends) will make it out of Civil War alive, and trailers have specifically highlighted a scene where Iron Man is shown cradling the severely-damaged, unmoving body of War Machine – whose armor looks to have suffered a serious blow to its power-source. The original Civil War comic miniseries likewise had a notorious body-count, with Black Goliath and Captain America himself among the dead, Spider-Man’s Aunt May mortally wounded and many heroes retiring, quitting or disappearing into anonymity as a result.
